IBAM EP46: Why Every Faith-Driven Leader Needs a Mentor

"Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another." - Proverbs 27:17

Why Every Faith-Driven Leader Needs a Mentor

Have you ever watched a young bird learn to fly? The parent bird doesn't just push the baby out of the nest. First, it shows the baby how to flap its wings. It flies short distances to demonstrate. It brings food to build strength. When the time comes for the baby bird to fly, the parent bird stays close by.

This is a lot like mentorship.

What Is Mentorship?

Mentorship is when someone with experience helps guide someone who wants to learn and grow. It's like having a trusted friend who has walked the path before you and can show you the way.

In faith-driven leadership, mentorship is even more special. It's not just about getting better at your job. It's about growing closer to God while becoming a better leader.

Think of a mentor as a lighthouse. They don't steer your ship for you, but they shine a light to help you navigate through storms and find your way safely to shore.

God's Word Shows Us Examples of Mentorship

The Bible is full of amazing mentorship stories! Let's look at a few:

Moses and Joshua

Moses spent years teaching Joshua how to lead. He showed Joshua how to trust God and make wise choices. When it was time, Moses passed the leadership role to Joshua, who was ready to lead God's people into the Promised Land.

"Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it." - Deuteronomy 31:7

Elijah and Elisha

Elijah took Elisha under his wing and taught him about being a prophet. Elisha watched, learned, and eventually received a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit. This meant Elisha was fully prepared to continue God's work after Elijah was gone.

Jesus and His Disciples

Jesus is the perfect example of a mentor! He spent three years with His disciples. He didn't just teach them with words—He showed them how to live, serve, and lead by His example. Jesus prepared them to share His message with the whole world.

Paul and Timothy

Paul called Timothy his "true son in the faith." He wrote letters to encourage Timothy to be brave, stay true to Scripture, and lead with honesty. Paul showed Timothy how to be a strong leader for God's church.

How Mentorship Makes Faith-Driven Leaders Better

Why should you care about mentorship? Here are three big reasons:

1. It Builds Godly Character

Good mentors help you grow in important qualities like:

  • 1. Humility (thinking of others first)

  • 2. Patience (being calm when things are hard)

  • 3. Integrity (doing the right thing, even when no one is watching)

Your mentor can help you live out your faith at work, at home, and everywhere you go!

2. It Gives You Wisdom and Better Understanding

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 15:22, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed."

When you face tough choices, a mentor can share:

  • 1. Lessons they learned from their own mistakes

  • 2. Ideas you might not have thought about

  • 3. Ways to see challenges from God's perspective

3. It Spreads Your Good Impact

When someone mentors you, you grow. Then when you mentor someone else, they grow too! This creates a wonderful chain reaction that helps build God's Kingdom.

A Real Story of Mentorship in Action

Meet Sarah, a young business owner who makes handmade soaps. When she started her business, she struggled with difficult customers and managing her time. She often felt stressed and wondered if she should give up.

Then Sarah met Patience, an older woman at her church who had run her own business for 20 years. Patience offered to meet with Sarah once a week to talk about her business.

Patience didn't just give Sarah business advice. She also:

  • 1. Prayed with Sarah about her challenges

  • 2. Reminded Sarah that her work could honor God

  • 3. Helped Sarah see how to treat customers with Christ-like love

After six months with Grace as her mentor, Sarah's business began to grow. But more importantly, Sarah grew in her faith. Now Sarah mentors a teenager at church who wants to start her own business someday!

How to Find a Mentor

Would you like someone to guide you on your leadership journey? Here's how to find a mentor:

1. Pray About It

Ask God to lead you to the right person. He knows exactly who you need in your life!

2. Look for Someone Who Matches Your Goals

Find someone whose:

  • Faith is strong and active

  • Values match what you believe

  • Experience can help you grow

3. Start Small

You don't have to ask, "Will you be my mentor?" right away. Try:

  • Asking for advice about a specific problem

  • Inviting them for coffee or lunch

  • Joining a small group they lead

Most mentorships start as simple friendships and grow from there.

How to Be a Great Mentor

Maybe you're ready to guide someone else! Here's how to be an effective mentor:

1. Show, Don't Just Tell

Be a good example in how you:

  • Treat others

  • Handle problems

  • Make decisions based on your faith

2. Make Time

Mentoring takes commitment. Set regular times to meet with your mentee and be fully present when you're together.

3. Keep Faith at the Center

Always point your mentee toward God. Help them see how they can:

  • Apply Bible teachings to their leadership

  • Pray about decisions

  • Use their talents to serve God

Simple Tips for Both Mentors and Mentees

Whether you're giving or receiving guidance, remember:

  • Be humble - Everyone has something to learn

  • Listen well - Sometimes the best help comes from just hearing someone out

  • Be patient - Growth takes time

  • Set clear goals - Know what you hope to achieve together

  • Follow through - Do what you say you'll do
