Burnout, Boundaries & Biblical Balance — Lessons from Samantha Wendt
Picture a woman struggling to climb a single flight of stairs, weighed down by 240 pounds, battling depression and exhaustion, while doctors simply shrugged and said nothing was wrong. This was Samantha Wendt's reality before her remarkable transformation journey began.
Like a withered plant desperate for water, Samantha's body and spirit were crying out for nourishment that modern medicine couldn't provide. Today, she's not only found her own path to healing but has created a mission to help others restore their health, identity, and purpose through her virtual wellness center.
From Sugar Queen to Wellness Warrior
Samantha describes herself as once being "the queen to three king-sized candy bars plus all the sweet treats in one single day." Her sugar addiction and poor health were slowly draining away her vitality and joy. Western medicine offered little help, dismissing her concerns despite obvious signs that something was deeply wrong.
But her story took a dramatic turn when she finally found guidance that set her on a path to wellness. Just as her health began improving, life threw new challenges her way. In 2016, a motor vehicle accident left her with an undiagnosed concussion that would eventually develop into chronic post-concussion syndrome. By 2017, she received another difficult diagnosis: Celiac disease, along with multiple food allergies.
The challenges didn't stop there. Her entire household had to eliminate gluten, dairy, corn, soy, peanuts, almonds, and eggs to accommodate the family's various food sensitivities. Then in 2020, amid a global pandemic, the naturopathic doctor who had been guiding her family's health journey passed away.
This series of setbacks could have broken many people's spirit. Instead, they became the fertile soil from which Samantha's calling would grow.
Empowered by Nature: A Virtual Wellness Mission
Today, Samantha Wendt operates Empowered by Nature Wellness Center, a virtual clinic serving clients across the United States and into Canada. Her approach combines several healing modalities with biblical principles to address the whole person.
"I am a certified master herbalist, a certified facial analysis master," Samantha explains. Through facial analysis, she can identify internal health issues by examining the lines, blemishes, and contours of a person's face. "Those all tell a story of what is going on inside with your health. And your face shape tells about your personality."
She's also certified in a program called SH rec claim, which focuses on "eradicating the chronic inflammation which is a huge epidemic here in the United States." This approach gently detoxifies the body, boosts the immune system, and often helps clients lose excess weight.
But perhaps most unique is her integration of trauma-informed coaching with biblical principles. "I am helping the wayward souls come back home to God so they can restore their health, their identity and purpose," Samantha says.
The Body-Emotion-Spirit Connection
Samantha's approach recognizes something that many modern healthcare systems miss: our bodies, emotions, and spirits are deeply interconnected.
"As a certified master herbalist... we have learned that different organs host different emotions, like the liver loves to host anger," she explains. This understanding allows her to address not just physical symptoms, but their emotional and spiritual roots as well.
For each client, she considers: "Which emotion are we dealing with? Why are we dealing with that emotion? And then how can we support the liver not only with supplements, but what truth within the Bible? Is there a certain Bible verse that we need to just kind of repeat and spread that truth over our body?"
This individualized approach stands in stark contrast to conventional medicine, where, as Samantha puts it, "10 different people can get the same treatment." Instead, she honors each person's unique makeup and circumstances. "Our bodies are uniquely made. And so what will work for me may not work for you or somebody else."
The Three-Part Restoration Journey
Samantha's wellness philosophy centers around a three-part restoration process:
Health Restoration: Creating a strong physical foundation is the first step. "Before we can really get into our purpose, we need to heal our bodies so that we can have a temple for God, for the Holy Spirit to really be living and thriving in."
Identity Restoration: Once physical health improves, clients can work on healing emotional wounds and discovering who they truly are in Christ.
Purpose Restoration: With health and identity restored, clients can finally step into their God-given purpose with confidence and energy.
"When somebody feels better, they become the best version of who God called them to be," Samantha explains. "They do better relationally. They do better in their walk with the Lord, they do better in their professional life. Maybe they have the energy now to pursue a calling."
When Business Becomes Mission
Samantha's entrepreneurial journey has been anything but smooth. After four years in business, she candidly admits she's still working toward consistent clientele. Yet her faith remains unshaken.
"I've had people tell me the first year in business, 'You just need to shut down your business. You haven't had consistent clients.' And I'm like, it's God's business. It's his timing."
Recently, she experienced a profound shift in perspective. "The revelation that my friend and I had the other day is I've been following the business model and my business is not a business. It's actually a mission field to do God's work."
This realization has transformed how she approaches challenges. Rather than measuring success solely by client numbers or revenue, she sees each interaction as an opportunity to make God's love visible to someone who may not yet know Him.
Walking in Faith Through Business Pivots
Like many entrepreneurs, Samantha has faced criticism for her frequent "pivots" or business direction changes. "I know it drives some people nuts because sometimes it's once a month I'm pivoting and new messages are coming," she acknowledges.
But these pivots come from a place of divine guidance. "When the Lord says to pivot, you pivot," she says simply. Rather than following a rigid business plan, she remains flexible and responsive to God's leading.
This approach requires tremendous faith, especially when facing financial uncertainty. But Samantha reminds us that building a successful business—particularly in alternative health—takes time. "It takes what, five to 10 years for businesses to really start to flourish and then thrive."
The Empty Cup Cannot Pour
The title of Samantha's story contains a powerful truth: "You Can't Build What God Called You To If You're Running on Empty." Like a cup that must first be filled before it can pour into others, we must attend to our own health and wholeness before we can effectively serve in our calling.
For too many people, especially in ministry and helping professions, self-care takes a backseat to service. But as Samantha's journey illustrates, neglecting your health eventually compromises your ability to fulfill your purpose.
Her message encourages us to see wellness not as selfish indulgence but as responsible stewardship of the body God has given us. When we care for our physical temples, manage our emotions, and stay spiritually connected, we become vessels through which God's love and power can flow unhindered.
Your Next Step Toward Wholeness
If Samantha's story resonates with you, perhaps you too are feeling the effects of running on empty. Whether you're battling chronic health issues, struggling with emotional wounds, or simply feeling disconnected from your purpose, her holistic approach might offer the integrated support you need.
